What is a National Monument?

National Monuments are created to preserve nationally significant resources. Although the National Monument may contain historical buildings, structures, or statues, the intention is to protect the water or land areas.

National Monuments are often overseen by the National Park Service, but can also be managed by other federal agencies, such as the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Forest Service, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Devils Tower was our very first National Monument, established by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1906.
