Native Americans
Hillsboro, and the surrounding areas, are located in the traditional territory of the Atfalati people, a band of Kalapuya speakers.
Beginning in the 1700’s, explorers brought disease and change to the people of the Tualatin Valley. By the time the majority of Oregon Trail settlers arrived, there were very few Atfalati-Kalapuyan people left. In the 1850’s, tribe members were forced to the Grand Ronde Reservation.
Tualatin Kalapuyans gathered seasonally under five Oregon White Oak trees, a place they called Chatakuin. One 500 year old Oak still stands. This historic site is located right off Highway 26 at the Brookwood Parkway/Helvetia exit.
